The staff at GreenCupboards had a difficult week testing products. With Halloween just around the corner we felt it would be appropriate to sample organic candies and compare them to their conventional counterparts. While chocolate may be the first thing that comes to mind, hard candies are a big sell during the Halloween season. For our organic candy we're sampling YummyEarth's Fruit Lollipops, and Super Sour Pops. We compared the candies on taste, color, ingredients, and packaging.
Lollipops
For the lollipop lovers there is an assortment of sizes, colors, and flavors of lollipops. There are large rainbow spiral sugar ones, any flavored fruit ones, ones with a prize in the middle, and, now, organic ones.
YummyEarth is one of the first manufacturers of all organic candy. They have a wide range and variety of lollipops. Whether you like them sweet or sour, YummyEarth has a lollipop for you. We sampled the two assorted flavor bags of lollipops made by Yummy Earth: Organic Super Sour Pops and Organic Fruit Lollipops. Each bag contains four flavors. In the Super Sour Pops there is: Strawberry Smash, Sour Apple Tart, Googly Grape, and Very Very Cherry. In the Fruit Lollipops you get: Mango Tango, Pomegranate Pucker, Tooberry Blueberry, and Wet-face Watermelon. It was a challenge for our team, very difficult indeed, but we tried all eight flavors. Here are our findings:
| Super Sour Pops | Fruit Lollipops | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Strawberry Smash | Spectacular! We were surprised by how much we liked the Strawberry Smash. It was a sweet strawberry flavor with the right amount of sour! | Mango Tango | Tasty. We loved Mango Tango, it definitely exceeded our expectations! |
| Sour Apple Tart | Scrumptious. Absolutely Amazing. It tastes like a fresh sour apple. Very pure flavor! | Pomegranate Pucker | A true likeness to pomegranate. A wonderful treat! |
| Googly Grape | This lollipop tastes like grape candy should taste with just a hint of sour. Very enjoyable! | Tooberry Blueberry | Tooberry Blueberry is a unique flavor. At first it tastes a lot like a blueberry muffin, but after a while is a little bittersweet |
| Very Very Cherry | Good. Not the best in the bunch, but still pretty good. It could possible use more cherry flavoring. | Wet-face Watermelon | Our team had mixed feelings about this one. One member said it was "Delicious" while another felt it "tastes a little like cotton candy" |
How Conventional Lollipops Stack Up
While conventional candies may satisfy that sweet tooth there are some major differences between conventional candies and organic candies. When we compared the conventional lollipops to the YummyEarth organic lollipops we found the conventional lollipops to be not nearly as tasty.
This difference is largely due to the ingredients in each lollipop. YummyEarth lollipops are made with all natural ingredients. Here is the ingredients comparison for between YummyEarth and conventional lollipops.
| YummyEarth | Conventional Lollipops | |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients | Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Tapioca Syrup, and/or Organic Rice Syrup, Citric Acid (from beet sugar), Natural Flavors, may contain Organic Black Carrots, Organic Apple, Organic Wheat Grass, Organic Black Currant, Organic Carrot, Organic Pumpkin. | Sugar, Corn Syrup, Citric Acid,Salt(Butterscotch only), Titanium Dioxide color, Artificial and Natural Flavors and Artificial Colors. (FD&C Yellow 5, Red 40, Red 3, Yellow 6 and Blue 1) and Soya Lecithin. |
Conclusion:
Overall, our team felt the organic candies tasted better. Their flavors were more pure and true to their intended flavors. While the conventional lollipops tasted good, they were not as satisfying as the YummyEarth lollipops.
