Lunchtime is arguably the best period of the school day. It can also be the most wasteful period of the day as well. Next time you start a food fight, think about the environmental impact of your actions. What can you do to reduce your impact at lunch? That is what this article is about.
Don't waste food: Do not throw away food that can be saved and eaten at another time. Take home your un-eaten lunch.
Recycle: Most schools have a recycling bin near or next to the trash. Take a few seconds to find what you can recycle from your lunch. Recycling is easy, but you would be surprised how many people cannot find the time.
Food packaging: When picking out food for your lunches, find foods that have minimal packaging or recyclable packaging. Limit the amount of waste you will have to use right from the start. For drinks, fill your own reusable water bottle with water or a drink of your choice.
Lunch pail: Use a lunch box or pail as opposed to a paper bag. You will save money and paper by using a reusable lunch sack.
These things should help you on your way to having a green lunch. Happy snacking!
